Baseball Secures Sweep of Gardner-Webb in Comeback Fashion

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford baseball team was locked in a tight pitchers' duel for six innings at Russell C. King Field before pulling away with five runs in the seventh to snag a 7-2 victory over the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs Sunday afternoon. Wofford earns a series sweep and extends its winning streak to five games to improve to 17-8. Gardner-Webb falls to 9-16.

With the sweep, the Terriers remain perfect in their weekend series this season, winning all five. Wofford also remains perfect on Sundays (5-0) and in the gold uniforms (3-0). The result is just the third comeback win for the Terriers this season.

Dalton Rhadans (4-1) earned the win for the Terriers as the final hurler on the bump, tossing the last 3.0 innings with two strikeouts. He allowed no runs or walks and only three hits. Dom Marcoccio started for the Terriers, pitching 4.1 innings and relenting two runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks. He fanned six. Holden Wilder was the middle arm, pitching 1.2 innings of scoreless ball and allowing just two hits.

The loss was charged to Kyle Skidmore (1-1) after he surrendered four runs (one earned) on two hits and a walk.

Though the squads tied with eight hits apiece, Wofford was able to take advantage of Gardner-Webb's miscues. The Runnin' Bulldogs committed three errors in the field, one more than Wofford's two, and the Terriers worked seven walks while only walking two of Gardner-Webb's batters.

Zeb Roos led the way as the only Terrier with two hits. Brice Martinez knocked in the most runs, picking up two RBI and tallying a hit. John Dempsey extended his on-base streak to 12 games with three walks in the contest, and Gunnar Johnson worked two free passes. Lawson Hill's on-base streak extended to a team-best 16 games with his single, and he also drove in a run. Brennen Dorighi and Nolen Hester each also picked up an RBI, with Hester's coming via a solo home run, his first of the season.

Gardner-Webb struck first in the top of the first with an RBI single back up the middle. An error on a dropped fly ball in center field brought home a second run, providing the Runnin' Bulldogs with an early 2-0 advantage.

Wofford quickly got a run back in the bottom of the frame, as back-to-back walks to lead off the inning set Jack Renwick up for a bunt. He laid it down perfectly, giving the defense no play for an infield hit that loaded the bases. A throwing error by the third baseman on the next play allowed Gunnar Johnson to score, pulling the score to 2-1.

The pitchers of both teams settled in after that first inning, holding their opposing offenses in check until Wofford broke through in the bottom of the sixth to pull level. Nolen Hester led the inning off with a solo dinger to right field, tying the score at 2-2.

The Terriers claimed the lead in the following inning, opening up for five runs to pull away. With runners on first and second with no outs, Ryan Galanie reached on an infield single, and a throwing error by the pitcher allowed the go-ahead run to come across the plate. Lawson Hill then lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, plating Renwick. Brennen Dorighi singled to right field to score Galanie, and a few batters later, Brice Martinez delivered a triple into the corner in right field to bring home two more runs. The score stood at 7-2.

Dalton Rhadans held firm on the mound from there, keeping the Runnin' Bulldogs out of the run column and securing the 7-2 triumph for Wofford.

The Terriers return to action Wednesday at Russell C. King Field for a midweek matchup with Winthrop. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. against the Eagles.
