SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford baseball team was mostly in control at Russell C. King Field, but Winthrop pulled close with a two-run homer in the seventh. However, reigning SoCon Pitcher of the Week
Dalton Rhadans came on and slammed the shut with four punchouts over the last two innings to secure the 4-2 triumph over the Eagles Wednesday night. The Terriers improve to 18-8, matching their season-best six-game win streak. Winthrop falls to 6-17 on the year.
Â
Carter Bailey (1-0) took home his first-career win after tossing 1.0 inning as the first reliever. He allowed just one walk.
Matthew Marchal started on the bump, going 2.0 innings with one hit and one strikeout. After Bailey relieved him,
Luke Stephens came on for 2.0 innings, striking out two and surrendering only a hit and a walk.
Michael Sills recorded a punchout in 0.1 innings, and
Clay Schwaner gave up two runs in 1.2 innings, totaling two strikeouts.
Dalton Rhadans (4) hurled the final 2.0 innings, retiring all six batters he faced with four by way of the strikeout. Of the 21 pitches he threw, only two were balls.
Â
Winthrop starter Josh Bookbinder (0-1) tossed 4.0 innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on two hits and a walk.
Â
Though both sides tallied five hits apiece, the Eagles made more mistakes with three errors in the field, while the Terriers committed none. Only two of Wofford's runs were batted in, with
Trey Yunger bringing them both home. He was one of the five Terriers with hits, as
Jack Renwick,
Brennen Dorighi,
Zeb Roos and
John Dempsey joined him in the hit column. Yunger recorded the only extra base hit, a double, and he and Dorighi each swiped a base. Dempsey's hit extended his on-base streak to 13 games, the longest such streak currently for the Terriers.
Â
After the first two innings went by quietly, the Terriers manufactured three runs to jump out in front in the third.
Nolen Hester led-off the inning by getting hit by a pitch.
Zeb Roos worked a free pass to put two runners on, and
Brice Martinez laid down a well-executed sacrifice bunt to advance them both into scoring position.
Trey Yunger then delivered, bouncing a double into left field to plate both Terriers for the early lead. A batter later, Yunger would steal third, and an errant throw allowed him to scurry home for a third run. Wofford was in front, 3-0.
Â
An inning later, the Terriers capitalized on another Winthrop fielding miscue to extend their lead. With two outs in the frame,
Brennen Dorighi kept things alive by ripping a single through the left side. He then took off for second, stealing the bag while the throw once again sailed into the outfield. The Eagle error allowed Dorighi to get up and run all the way around to score, providing a 4-0 advantage for Wofford.
Â
Winthrop made things a little more interesting, pulling closer in the top of the seventh. A lead-off double down the left field line put a runner immediately in scoring position. After a fielder's choice, the occupied base was of no importance as the third batter of the inning lifted a home run to left center. Wofford's lead was cut in half, 4-2.
Â
Winthrop's comeback hopes were quickly dashed, as
Dalton Rhadans took to the mound in the top of the eighth and delivered. Striking out four of the six batters he faced, Rhadans locked down the game and protected the lead for a 4-2 Terrier victory to extend the win streak to six.
Â
Wofford now hits the road, traveling to Texas for a weekend set at #18 Dallas Baptist. Game one against the Patriots is set for a 7:30 p.m. ET first pitch Friday night, with the game streaming on the Patriot Broadcasting Network.
