Softball Takes Doubleheader Against Western Carolina on Senior Night

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford softball team took both games of a doubleheader against Western Carolina on senior night at Hope Field. The Terriers earned a 12-inning 5-4 win in game one before defeating the Catamounts 6-4 in game two. Wofford improves to 32-17 on the season with a 9-11 mark in conference play.

The team celebrated four seniors in between games - Kaytlin Greenwood, Margaret Axelson, Gracie Parker, and Kate Platte.

"I am so happy for our seniors," said head coach Chelsea Butler. "Watching the team show up for them was really cool. We know that in the SoCon you cannot take anyone lightly. We have to take all our momentum and energy into tomorrow and keep fighting for our seniors."

GAME ONE
Abby Greenwood got the start in game one of the series against Western Carolina, pitching 5.1 innings. Greenwood allowed three runs on nine hits while striking out six batters. Natalya Salo earned the win, improving her record to 10-3 on the season. Salo pitched 6.2 innings and had zero earned runs on one hit with two strikeouts. Leading the way offensively was Brianna Stanley, batting 2-of-5 with two RBI and a double. Addison Lucier went 3-of-4 from the plate with an RBI. Kaytlin Greenwood also recorded an RBI. Gracie Parker, Desirae Devine, and Abbi Campbell tallied one hit apiece. Abbi Campbell led the team with two stolen bases. Western Carolina out hit Wofford 10-9 but had two errors to Wofford's one. The 12 innings played are the most since Wofford played 12 at Furman in 2024.

Western Carolina got on the board first, scoring a run in the top of the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. Wofford responded in the third, however, taking advantage of a Catamount error to drive in Abbi Campbell and tie the game at one-all. After a scoreless fourth inning for both teams, Brianna Stanley doubled to right center to drive in Addison Lucier and put the Terriers up 2-1 in the fifth. The Catamounts were able to respond, adding two more runs in the top of the sixth to retake a 3-2 advantage.

In the bottom of the sixth, Gracie Parker was able to reach first from a bunt to start the inning. After advancing to third on the next two at bats, Kaytlin Greenwood sent Parker home to tie the game again at three runs each. The game would remain even at three runs for the next three innings. In the 10th frame, Western Carolina finally broke through to take a 4-3 lead. With two outs and a runner on third in the bottom of the 10th, Brianna Stanley drove in Abbi Campbell to extend the contest once more. Neither team found home in the 11th, and the Terriers were able to keep Western Carolina scoreless again in the 12th. Desirae Devine advanced to third base off a sacrifice bunt in the bottom half of the frame, leading to a sacrifice fly to win the game 5-4 from Addison Lucier. Wofford improves to 3-0 in extra innings this season.

GAME TWO
Margaret Axelson started in the 6-4 win in game two, pitching 5.0 innings to earn her eighth win of the season. Axelson allowed two earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts. Sydney Baker closed the final two innings, giving up only one hit to earn her second save of the season. Kaytlin Greenwood led the way offensively, going 2-of-3 with a homer, two runs scored, two RBI, and two stolen bases. Addison Lucier followed behind with a 2-of-4 appearance at the plate with two RBI. Brianna Stanley had three hits on four at bats as well. Emry Masterson had a career-high two RBI with one hit. Wofford out hit Western Carolina 10-7 as both teams finished with one error apiece.

Margaret Axelson started the game off hot, as Western Carolina had back-to-back 1-2-3 innings. Wofford was able to capitalize in the second, taking an early 3-0 lead. Kaytlin Greenwood started the inning off with a single and would later steal both second and third base. Emry Masterson was able to drive in Greenwood with a groundout to take a 1-0 lead. Addison Lucier later scored Desirae Devine and Abbi Campbell with a double down the right field line to put Wofford up 3-0.

Both teams were scoreless in the third and fourth innings, but the Terriers added three more runs in the bottom half of the fifth. After Rivers Sampson reached first off a fielder's choice, Kaytlin Greenwood hit her third homer of the season to give Wofford a five-run advantage. Desirae Devine doubled to left center after that and would find home after a single up the middle from Emry Masterson. With Wofford up 6-0 heading into the sixth, Western Carolina found some life. The Catamounts scored four runs in the inning to threaten the Terrier lead. That was all the team could get, however, as Wofford earned a 6-4 win to claim the series.

The Terriers will look for the sweep tomorrow afternoon with a scheduled first pitch of 1:00 p.m. The game will serve as the regular season finale.
