SPARTANBURG S.C. – The No. 8 Wofford women's soccer team is set to host No. 9 Furman in a rivalry showdown in the 2022 Southern Conference Tournament First Round at Snyder Field on Tuesday, October 25 at 7:00 p.m. The match will be streamed on ESPN+.
Â
The Terriers concluded the regular season by taking down the top-seeded Chattanooga Mocs 2-0 last Friday and falling in a hard-fought battle against the second-seeded Samford Bulldogs 1-2 this past Sunday. The Terriers earned their first win over Chattanooga since the 2014 season, with Wofford's two goals also being the most goals conceded by the Mocs in a SoCon game this season.
Â
The strong finish to the season propelled the Terriers into hosting the opening round of the tournament, with No. 7 The Citadel hosting No. 10 VMI in the other first round match.
Â
Wofford enters the match at 8-7-3 (3-4-2) and earned its first winning season since 2013. The Terriers hosted Furman earlier this season on Sept. 29, with that match ending in a scoreless draw. The Paladins out-shot Wofford 20-7 and 9-3 in shots on goal, but
Caroline Doss made nine saves in goal to keep Furman off the scoreboard.
Â
The Terriers are led by
Ansley Elizalde's four goals on the season, with two goals coming this past weekend against Chattanooga and Samford.
Mia Bookhard recorded two goals and an assist this season while
Haley McCaffrey added two goals.
Alexis Mapplebeck led the team with three assists while adding a goal. In total, 10 Terriers have found the back of the net this season.
Â
Defensively, Doss has been the heart and soul of the Terriers with a SoCon-leading seven shutouts on the season. Of the seven clean sheets, four came against conference opponents including a stretch of three consecutive SoCon shutouts against ETSU (1-0), Furman (0-0) and Mercer (0-0). Her nine-save effort against Furman earned her SoCon Defensive Player of the Week, with Doss out-doing that performance with a career-high 11 saves against Mercer in the following game.
Â
Furman closed the season 8-8-2 (3-4-2 SoCon), winning only one match in the team's final seven games (1-4-2 in that stretch) after starting the season 7-4.
Â
Wofford earned the eight seed in the tournament by a tiebreaker over Furman based on head-to-head results against the top seed of the tournament, Chattanooga. This is the first postseason meeting between Wofford and Furman since the 2019 season. The winner of the match will travel to Tennessee to face No. 1 Chattanooga in the Quarterfinals.
