Box Score Game Box (pdf)SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On Saturday afternoon, the Wofford baseball team was defeated 12-2 by Elon at Russell C. King Field. The Terriers had a 1-0 lead after six innings, but the Phoenix scored twelve runs in the final three innings to win the contest.
Wofford is 19-17 on the season and 2-9 in the Southern Conference. Elon is 23-12 overall and 9-5 in league play. The Terriers were led by Seth Neely with two hits and an RBI, while Jesse Morris struck out five batters in 6.2 innings. Andy Moore led the Phoenix with three hits, while Tyler McVicar had four RBIs.
Elon had singles in the top of the first and second innings. In the bottom of the second, Eric Brenk hit a one-out double and moved to third on a wild pitch. A sacrifice fly by James Plaisted gave Wofford a 1-0 lead after two innings. Both teams were retired in order in the third inning.
In the top of the fourth Elon left a runner on third base and Wofford was retired in order in the bottom of the fourth. The Phoenix was retired in order in the top of the fifth. In the bottom of the fifth, James Plaisted was hit by a pitch and Demetrius Jennings walked but two were stranded at the end of the inning.
The Phoenix led off the sixth inning with a single, but a double play erased the base runner. Seth Nelly singled with two outs in the bottom of the sixth but was unable to advance. Elon had runners on first and second with one out in the top of the seventh. A home run over the left field fence by Tyler McVicar gave Elon a 3-1 lead. The Phoenix added two more singles and a double by Quinn Bower pushed the score to 4-1.
The Terriers were retired in order in the bottom of the seventh. Elon led off the eighth with back-to-back doubles and a walk loaded the bases. Back-to-back sacrifice flies made it a 6-1 game in the middle of the eighth inning. Wofford opened the bottom of the eighth with singles by Matt Ramsay and Dylan May. A two-out single by Seth Neely plated a run to cut the lead to 6-2.
Elon loaded the bases in the top of the ninth with a single, error, and intentional walk. A wild pitch scored one run and a single by Tucker Norton drove in two runs to give the Phoenix a 9-2 lead. A three-run homer by Nick Zammarelli pushed the score to 12-2. In the bottom of the ninth, the Terriers were retired in order to end the game.
Wofford pitcher Jesse Morris (6-4) went 6.2 innings and allowed four runs on seven hits. He struck out six batters and did not issue a walk. He has moved into fifth place in school history with 224 career strikeouts. Merritt Huber gave up one hit in a third of an inning. Connor Foltyn gave up two runs on two hits. Jordan Accetta went an inning and allowed one hit. Spencer Kulman threw two-thirds of an inning and allowed four runs on two hits. Elliot Lance gave up two runs on two hits. Chris Sheehan struck out the lone batter he faced in the ninth inning.
Elon starting pitcher Michael Elefante (6-1) threw seven innings and allowed one run on four hits and struck out five batters. John Antonelli went the final two innings and gave up just one hit with three strikeouts.
The Terriers conclude the series with Elon on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at King Field.
