Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Elon

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – In a Saturday doubleheader at Russell C. King Field, Wofford and Elon split the two games for the Terriers to win the weekend series. In the first game, the Phoenix jumped out to an 8-0 lead after two innings and won the contest 13-3. The second game was highlighted by Cash Collins allowing only two hits in eight innings on the way to a 2-0 victory.

Wofford is 16-23 overall and 5-13 in the Southern Conference. Elon is 23-19 overall and 13-8 in conference play. It marked the first series win by Wofford over Elon since the 2007 season.

In the first game, Elon scored in the top of the first inning when a double by Ryan Kinsella drove in two runs to take an early 2-0 lead. Singles from Blaine Bower and Joey Tomko each drove in runs for a 4-0 lead. A bunt single by Chris Bresnahan added a run to make it a 5-0 game.

Wofford had two singles in the bottom of the first, but both runners were left on base. Elon added two more runs in the top of the second on a double by Garrett Koster and a sacrifice fly by Ryan Kinsella. A ground out by Tyler McVicar scored a run for an 8-0 lead.

In the top of the fifth, Ryan Kinsella and Tyler McVicar hit back-to-back solo home runs for Elon to take a 10-0 advantage. Wofford had two singles in the bottom of the sixth inning, but both runners were left on base. Elon added a run in the top of the seventh before the game was delayed due to lightning in the area for 34 minutes.

The Terriers loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh and scored one run on a ground out by Clark Wise to make it an 11-1 contest. Wofford left two runners on base at the end of the inning. Sebastian Gomez hit a solo home run in the top of the eighth and a sacrifice fly added a run for Elon for a 13-1 lead. The Terriers scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth when Mac Doyle singled and Matthew Pelt hit a home run over the left fence for a 13-3 score.

Wofford starter Pete Noordsy (2-2) went only one and a third before giving way to Connell Anderson. Noordsy gave up eight runs on seven hits with three walks. Anderson threw five innings and allowed three runs on six hits with four strikeouts. Mason Bradley went 1.2 innings with two runs allowed on four hits with a strikeout. Gus White worked an inning and struck out two batters.

Elon starter Kyle Webb (4-3) threw six innings and did not allow a run. He gave up six hits and struck out seven batters for the victory. Grant McCoury picked up the save with three innings on the mound as he allowed three runs on five hits with two strikeouts.

In the second game, Wofford had two singles in the bottom of the first but both were left on base. In the bottom of the third, Josh Hyman and Mac Doyle had singles. With two out, Eric Brenk hit a double down the left line to score Hyman for a 1-0 lead.

Each team left one runner on base in the fourth and fifth innings. Elon had a single in the top of the seventh by Blaine Bower, but he was picked off to end to end the inning. In the bottom of the seventh, Stephen Cantrell reached second on a throwing error and got to third on a fly ball by James Foster. Josh Hyman drove in the run on a single up the middle to give the Terriers a 2-0 advantage. Both teams were retired in order in the eighth and Elon went one-two-three in the ninth as Wofford got the shutout.

Wofford starter Cash Collins (4-5) threw a season-high eight innings with two hits allowed and six strikeouts, while walking only two. Eric Eck struck out one in the ninth to earn his seventh save of the season.

Elon starter Spencer Medick (1-3) went 5.1 innings and gave up only one run on seven hits with six strikeouts. John Antonelli threw two innings and allowed one run on two hits with three strikeouts. Jordan Darnell went the final two-thirds of an inning and allowed one hit.

Prior to the first game on Saturday, a dedication ceremony for the halo surrounding home plate was held in memory of Jason Derrick ’96. Derrick was a pitcher for the Wofford baseball team from 1993-96.

Next week, the Terriers will travel to UNC Asheville on Tuesday afternoon for a 3:00 p.m. contest. A three-game home series with SoCon leader Appalachian State begins on Friday at 6:00 p.m.
