Wofford vs. Samford Box Score
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Despite a close first half, the Wofford women’s basketball team was unable to overcome a solid offensive effort by the Samford Bulldogs, falling 71-58 in Southern Conference action.
Wofford took an early 2-0 lead off a jumper by Mahagony Williams a minute and a half into the contest. Samford answered with a two-pointer at the 17:39 mark to tie the score at two, then took a 5-2 lead off a three-pointer from Emily London. Both teams remained scoreless for the next four minutes, with Wofford breaking the dry spell at 12:46 off another jumper from Williams.
The Terriers took the lead at 13-10 with almost ten minutes remaining in the half, but the Bulldogs answered with a 6-0 run to take a 16-13 advantage. Samford continued to build its lead to as many as six points before Wofford mounted a comeback.
The Terriers managed to tie the score at 25 with 1:31 remaining in the half, but a two-pointer from Monica Maxwell, two good free-throws from Hannah Dawson and a three-pointer at the buzzer by Paige Anderson gave the Bulldogs a 33-25 lead heading into halftime.
The teams traded baskets to open the second half, but three three-pointers from Samford helped the Bulldogs build a 49-39 lead at the 11:37 mark. The Bulldogs would add three more three-pointers before the eight minute mark, and were able to hold the Terriers scoreless for almost six minutes while racking up a 13-0 run themselves. Samford’s 62-41 lead was its largest of the half.
The Terrier dry spell was broken by a three-pointer from freshman Rachel Brittenham, and a jumper from Brittenham helped cut the Bulldog lead in half at 57-67 with less than a minute remaining, but Wofford was unable to match the Samford offensive effort, falling 71-58.
The Bulldogs were led by Emily London’s 20 points, while Hannah Dawson and Savannah Hill added 13 and 12, respectively. Dawson led the team with 7 rebounds, while London added three steals in the win.
Mahagony Williams and Natalie Gramblin led the Terriers with 13 points apiece, while freshman Rachel Brittenham added 11. Williams led the team with seven rebounds, while Kathlyn Varno grabbed six boards and Brittenham and Kelly Dwyer each added five. Brittenham also added five assists, while Williams recorded three blocks.
With the win, Samford improves to 7-2 on the season and 2-1 in the Southern Conference while Wofford falls to 1-6 overall and 0-2 in league play. The Terriers will travel to Chattanooga on Wednesday, December 9 to take on the Mocs. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
