Hill Notches 300th Hit as Baseball Falls in SoCon Championship

Terriers are downed twice on Sunday as Lawson Hill becomes first Terrier to reach 300 hits

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The No. 1 seeded Wofford baseball team left it all on the diamond for 16 innings at Fluor Field against the No. 4 seeded UNCG Spartans, dropping a twin bill championship series. Wofford was bested 10-2 and 12-2 in seven innings as UNCG went on to claim the 2022 Southern Conference Baseball Tournament Championship. As the runners-up, the Terriers slip to 42-16-1 while the champion Spartans improve to 34-28.

Wofford made its first championship game appearance since 2019 and only its third ever (2007). The Terriers finish as the runners-up for the second time (2019).

Though the day did not go the way of the Terriers, 5th-year catcher Lawson Hill earned a personal victory. With his single in the fifth inning of game two, Hill recorded the 300th hit of his career to become the first Terrier to ever reach that benchmark and just the 15th player in SoCon history.

Two Terriers earned spots on the SoCon Baseball All-Tournament Team. Junior starting pitcher Matthew Marchal and senior designated hitter Brennen Dorighi were recognized for their performances throughout the tournament.

Game One
Josh Vitus (4-4) suffered the loss as the starter for the Terriers, tossing 2.0 innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits and a walk.

Austin Parsley (10-4) started for the Spartans, picking up the win after hurling a complete game and giving up just two runs.

Despite out-hitting UNCG 9-8, Wofford was bested by eight runs in large part due to its three defensive errors. These created six unearned runs with only four of the 10 Spartans scores being earned.

Nolen Hester led the charge at the dish as the only Terrier with multiple hits. He picked up two base knocks and totaled both of the Terrier RBI. One of his hits was a double, with John Dempsey and Jack Renwick joining him as the three Wofford sluggers with two-baggers.

UNCG struck first quickly with two runs in the top of the first. An RBI single to right followed by an RBI groundout put the Spartans on top 2-0.

Wofford got on the board in the bottom of the third. A hit by pitch and single placed two runners on, and a sacrifice bunt moved them both into scoring position. Nolen Hester's RBI groundout helped the Terriers start their quest to chip away, making the deficit 4-1.

But the Spartans began to pull away in the top of the fifth. An RBI single opened the scoring for UNCG, and a throwing error brought in two more runs. A three-run homer later in the frame capped the inning at six Spartan runs and a 10-1 UNCG advantage.

In the eighth inning, Hester brought home another run with his double to right field, making the score 10-2. But it was too little, too late, as that is where the margin would stand. UNCG grabbed the win, forcing the decisive winner-take-all championship game.

Game Two
Dalton Rhadans (7-4) suffered the loss for the Terriers in his first-career start. The senior righty tossed 3.1 innings, allowing six runs on eight hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

Spartan starter Hunter Shuey (2-2) earned the win after a complete game performance, throwing all 7.0 innings and allowing two runs (zero earned) on six hits.

The six Wofford base knocks were dispersed evenly between six different Terriers. Lawson Hill's was one of the biggest, as it was the 300th of his career. Jack Renwick collected the lone extra-base hit, a double, and he picked up an RBI. The other Wofford RBI belonged to Trey Yunger.

UNCG struck first again in the top of the third with three consecutive homers. The first was a two-run long ball followed up by a pair of solo shots to make the score 4-0.

The Spartans knocked another two-run homer in the fourth to add on to their lead. A fielding error brought in another run to make the score 7-0.

Wofford found some life in the bottom of the fourth, getting on the board with two runs. A throwing error placed a runner on base for Jack Renwick, who tattooed a liner off the Green Monster in left for an RBI double. Trey Yunger followed up with a single through the right side to score Renwick, making the deficit 7-2.

UNCG got one of those runs back with an RBI groundout in the top of the fifth to extend its lead to 8-2.

Having been on the verge of history for a couple days, Lawson Hill finally hit the mark in the bottom of the fifth. His single through the left side was the 300th knock of his career to become the first Terrier to reach the coveted milestone.

The Spartans extended their lead further in the top of the sixth. An RBI fielder's choice and a sacrifice fly plated a pair of runs. They were followed by a run-scoring single that made the score 11-2.

A double plated a run in the top of the seventh for UNCG to push its lead to 10 runs, and the Spartans kept Wofford off the board in the bottom of the frame to lock in a 12-2 run-rule victory to claim the Southern Conference Championship.

The Terriers now await the results of the NCAA Selection Show tomorrow to find out if they will earn an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament. Should the Terriers earn a berth, their regional selection, opponents and schedule will be announced on the show, which airs at 12:00 p.m. tomorrow on ESPN2.
