LEXINGTON, Va. – Despite VMI out-hitting the Wofford baseball team Friday afternoon, the Terriers capitalized on three Keydet errors to win a tight 4-3 contest at Gray-Minor Stadium and secure the weekend series. Wofford is now 39-14-1 and 15-4-1 in the SoCon. VMI falls to 16-38 and 6-14 in league play.
Â
The Terriers take a 2-0 series advantage to claim their 11
th series win of the season, finishing the regular season with an 11-1-1 clip in weekend series. The 39
th win of the season ties the program record for wins, which was set by the 2015 squad (39-22).
Â
Reliever
Luke Stephens (2-1) earned the win for Wofford after 3.0 shutout innings of work. The righty surrendered just four hits with no walks, striking out two.
Coulson Buchanan started, throwing 3.0 innings with three runs allowed. The freshman gave up seven hits and four walks with three punchouts. He gave way to Stephens, who then passed the ball to
Dalton Rhadans (10) to lock down the save. Rhadans hurled the final 3.0 innings, allowing one hit, one walk and no runs while striking out three.
Â
VMI starter Trey Morgan (2-4) suffered the loss after giving up four runs (two earned) in 3.2 innings on two hits and four walks.
Â
The Keydets out-hit the Terriers 12-4 on the day, but one of the key shortcomings that haunted VMI was its 14 runners left on base. On top of the stranded runners, Keydet pitchers issued 10 walks to Wofford batters, and the VMI defense committed three errors, all of which contributed to Wofford runs.
Â
The Terrier hits belonged to
Lawson Hill,
John Dempsey,
Trey Yunger and
Zeb Roos. Dempsey reached base four times with three walks, and Yunger was the recipient of two free passes. Hill also worked a walk to reach twice. Despite going hitless,
Cameron Gill also reached twice by virtue of a pair of free passes.
Nolen Hester,
Ryan Galanie and
Brice Martinez each picked up an RBI even without any of them securing a base knock.
Â
Wofford jumped ahead in the top of the first by taking advantage of a pair of VMI miscues. A throwing error allowed
Lawson Hill to score the game's first run, and a second throwing error on a double steal allowed
John Dempsey to scurry home for the 2-0 lead.
Â
VMI cut that lead in half with a solo home run in the bottom of the frame. The Keydets threatened for more, but they left the bases loaded with Wofford remaining on top, 2-1.
Â
The Keydets pulled level in the bottom of the second by utilizing an RBI single. The score was 2-2.
Â
In the bottom of the third, VMI hit another solo homer to take its first lead of the series, 3-2.
Â
The Terriers jumped back in front in the top of the fourth with a pair of runs. Another VMI error allowed the tying run to score, and
Nolen Hester pushed across the go-ahead run with a well-placed sacrifice bunt. The score stood at 4-3 in favor of Wofford.
Â
That is where the score remained the rest of the way as the pitching staffs for both squads found their respective rhythms to turn in five and a half shutout innings to conclude the ballgame. VMI would get a baserunner in the bottom of the ninth with one out, but
Dalton Rhadans hunkered down on the mound to retire the side. He struck out a batter for the second out, and then he induced a looping fly ball to left that
Trey Yunger secured with a diving snag to also grab the 4-3 triumph.
Â
Wofford and VMI meet once more tomorrow afternoon in the regular season finale. The Terriers look for a sweep with a 1:00 p.m. first pitch in Lexington.
