Baseball Slips 9-2 to Western Carolina

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford baseball team surrendered a four-run fourth inning to Western Carolina at Russell C. King Field that helped lift the Catamounts to a 9-2 win over the Terriers on Saturday. Wofford drops to 37-14 and 13-4 in the SoCon with the loss, while Western Carolina improves to 25-25 and 9-8 in league play.

Terrier starter Coulson Buchanan (4-1) suffered the loss after allowing six runs (five earned) on eight hits and two walks in 3.0 innings. He tallied three strikeouts. Wofford utilized five total arms in the contest, with only Devon Sharts posting a scoreless outing. He tossed the final 3.0 innings with no runs, hits or walks allowed while securing four punchouts.

Gavin Mortenson (5-7) earned the win for the Catamounts after throwing a complete game with just two runs allowed on five hits.

Nolen Hester was the top Terrier at the dish with two hits and walk to reach base three total times. Brennen Dorighi notched an RBI with his massive long ball, a solo shot for his eighth of the season. John Dempsey collected Wofford's other RBI in the contest with his hit.

Dorighi's blast extended his on-base streak to 31 games. Ryan Galanie extended his hitting streak to 16 games with his base knock.

Western Carolina jumped on the board early with a lead-off home run in the first inning for a 1-0 edge.

A fielding error led to another Catamount run in the second for a 2-0 score.

Wofford pulled within on in the bottom of the frame when Brennen Dorighi launched a solo missile well over the right field wall. The score was 2-1.

A double in the top of the third extended the Catamount lead to 3-1, but in the bottom of the inning Wofford pulled back to within one. John Dempsey stroked a single into right that plated Nolen Hester to make the score 3-2.

Western Carolina found a groove in the top of the fourth, scoring four runs to pull away. An RBI double started things off, followed by a bases loaded walk. A wild pitch and a run-scoring double play made the score 7-2.

The Catamounts tacked on a run in each of the fifth and sixth for good measure, and they rode their starting pitcher Gavin Mortenson all the way to the end for a 9-2 defeat of the Terriers.

With the series even at 1-1, the squads meet once more tomorrow afternoon in the rubber match. Wofford looks to bounce back on senior day with a 1:00 p.m. first pitch against the Catamounts at Russell C. King Field.
