Wofford Baseball Explodes for First Win of Season

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford baseball team remained hot offensively, following last night's 10-run performance with 12 runs today. Behind four Terriers with multiple hits, Wofford earned its first win of the 2022 campaign by defeating George Mason 12-4 at Russell C. King Field on Saturday afternoon. The result moves both squads to 1-1 on the season.

Josh Vitus earned the win for the Terriers in his first start of the season after tossing 3.0 innings of scoreless baseball. He surrendered just one hit and one walk while fanning three. Coulson Buchanan hurled 3.0 innings of relief, allowing just one run with two strikeouts. Lucas Mahlstedt and Luke Stephens each pitched the final three frames, with Mahlstedt allowing two runs with two punchouts and Stephens hurling a scoreless ninth with a strikeout.

Mason Posey received the loss for the Patriots after allowing seven runs on seven hits in 3.1 innings as the starter.

Wofford totaled 13 hits as a team. Four Terriers – Nolen Hester, Jack Renwick, Brennen Dorighi and Zeb Roos – tallied two-hit ballgames. Roos led the way with three RBI, and Renwick was the only other Terrier to notch multiple with his two. Seven different Terriers recorded an RBI in the affair.

It didn't take the Terriers long to get on the scoreboard as they jumped out to an early two-run lead after the first inning. Jack Renwick opened the scoring with an RBI triple, and Brennen Dorighi brought him home with a sacrifice fly to put Wofford up 2-0 after one.

In the third inning, Zeb Roos brought home two runs when he singled through the left side. A well-executed double steal saw Shane Lussier swipe second, but more importantly, Roos was able to steal home for Wofford's fifth run of the game.

The floodgates really opened in the fourth inning as Wofford piled on five more runs. John Dempsey began the scoring with an RBI groundout. Roos then tallied his third RBI of the day on an infield single. Brice Martinez recorded his first hit and RBI with the Terriers on a single to center that plated Ryan Galanie. With the bases juiced, Nolen Hester worked a walk to score Cameron Gill. Renwick was then hit by a pitch, bringing Marshall Toole around to score. The Wofford lead stood at a whopping 10-0 after four innings.

Another bases loaded walk made the score 11-0 in the fifth, this time the free pass worked by Toole.

George Mason finally got on the board in the top of the sixth with an RBI double to left center.

In the bottom of the seventh, Wofford got that run back after a wild pitch allowed Galanie to come home. Wofford led 12-1.

The Patriots plated two runs in the eighth thanks to a double down the left field line, and their fourth and final run scored in the top of the ninth on a throwing error. The deficit was far too much to overcome, however, as Luke Stephens finished the contest to lock down the 12-4 triumph.

Wofford will conclude the series with George Mason at 1:00 p.m. tomorrow afternoon. Dom Marcoccio is slated to take the hill for the Terriers in the rubber match, while the Patriots are scheduled to start Danny Hosely.
