Football Finishes Spring Practice

SPARTANBURG, SC – The Wofford College football team wrapped up spring practice on Wednesday night. The team scrimmaged for approximately 50 plays at Gibbs Stadium, with almost all reps being taken by underclassmen.

“I think it has been a very productive spring,” said head coach Mike Ayers. “A lot of the young players have made a great deal of progress, which was one of the main goals we had. We have identified some playmakers in some of our young backs. I think we have a chance to be a solid football team, but we still have to continue to progress and get better as far as understanding all the concepts and nuances that go with playing offense, defense, and the kicking game. There was a lot of great effort and they came out to work every day. I am proud of their effort and it has been a lot of work to get to this point. I am sure the rest is well deserved, but I look forward to getting them back and heading towards the 2012 opening game.”

Quarterback Michael Weimer took all the snaps at quarterback during the scrimmage. Running backs Cam Flowers and Johnny Martin each scored touchdowns, while Zach Muller had a 20-yard catch down the middle. Will Irwin had four catches and Josh Holt came up with an interception.

Upon returning from spring break, the team will continue to work on speed and strength training. The squad will report for fall camp on August 5, with the first game scheduled for September 1 at Gardner-Webb.
