SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women’s tennis team jumped to an early advantage, sweeping doubles play, and didn’t let up, earning a 5-2 win over USC Upstate Thursday afternoon at the Reeves Tennis Center.
With the win, the Terriers improve to 2-1 on the season, while the Spartans drop to 2-2 overall. Thursday’s match was also the first time the two squads have met as Division I programs, with the last meeting between the two schools taking place in 1995.
Action kicked off with doubles play, where the pairing of Audrey Coventry and Othilia Lindqvist quickly defeated Upstate’s Maria Tonani and Lauren Byars (8-3) at the No. 3 position. Shortly thereafter, the duo of Sarah Evans and Guinn Garcia downed Talia Rojas and Isabel von Stryk (8-3) at the No. 1 spot to claim the doubles point for the Terriers. The team of Julia Paulson and Samantha Sullivan fought back at the No. 2 position, coming from behind to defeat Hannah Al-Sakati and Julie Bell (8-7(3)) to complete the doubles sweep for Wofford.
The Terriers didn’t let up at the start of singles action, as Emily Przystawski blanked
Lauren Byars (6-0, 6-0) at the No. 6 position, and Julia Paulson downed Julie Bell (6-0, 6-4) in straight sets at the No. 2 spot.
At the No. 3 position, Audrey Coventry defeated Talia Rojas (6-4, 6-2) in consecutive sets to seal the overall win for the Terriers. Guinn Garcia also picked up a win at the No. 4 spot, downing Hannah Al-Sakati (6-1, 6-3) in straight sets.
Wofford will hit the road for its next match, taking on UNC Asheville this Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. in Asheville, N.C.
