SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Exactly two weeks to go before the season opener, the Wofford football team took part in a scrimmage on Saturday night at Gibbs Stadium. The first team offense looked sharp, while the defense made big plays later in the night.
“We made some progress and the kids flew around,” said head coach Mike Ayers. “Looking at them I think we are in pretty good shape. We did some good things and had some big plays. We had some missed tackles, but that can be expected two weeks into it. I liked the intensity and I liked the way the guys played. I think on that first drive Mitch Allen was great. He snuck one pass route in there and had operated the run game well. We have some guys that can make some plays. The big thing that we have to do is work on the little things and attention to detail. I like where we are at right now, but we have miles to go.”
The scrimmage began with the team going through a typical pregame routine, which was followed by six plays from the ten yard line, on which Eric Breitenstein scored once. Both Christian Reed and Kasey Redfern then made three PATs each.
After punt and kickoff segments, the first team offense took the field. Joseph Inman and Brenton Bersin each had catches, which was followed by a 30-yard completion from Mitch Allen to Jeff Ashley. Brad Nocek scored on a two-yard touchdown run to end the drive.
Brian Kass took over at quarterback for the next series. A sack by Josh Roseborough backed the offense up and Travis Thomas tipped a pass at the line. With Chris White at the helm, the defense came up with a tackle for loss on a reverse by Mike McCrimon and a batted pass by E.J. Speller. However White found Montae Monroe down the sidelines for a 50-yard touchdown reception to cap the series.
Following kickoff return, James Lawson was in at quarterback. Tarek Odom came up with a fumble recovery during the series. Michael Weimer took the final series and Lavadrick Farrar had a 25-yard run. Zach Muller added a sack for the defense. On field goal attempts from 45-yard, Kasey Redfern made one of two tries, while Christian Reed missed both attempts.
Rain and lightning moved into the area which forced an early end to the scrimmage afterthe field goal attempts. The team only was able to get in 53 plays before calling it a night.
Eleven players were held out of the Saturday scrimmage, most for precautionary reasons. Linebacker James Lane was injured during the scrimmage and his status will be updated later in the week.
After an off day on Sunday, the team will have two practices on Monday, one on Tuesday and the final two-a-day on Wednesday. The second practice on Wednesday at 6 p.m. will be the final scrimmage of camp. The 2011 season begins with a road trip on September 3 at Presbyterian College.
