Baseball Drops Senior Day Tilt

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford baseball team fell behind early and could not overcome the initial deficit, dropping a 15-6 decision to VMI Friday afternoon at Russell C. King Field. The contest was the regular season finale as Wofford wraps up at 31-25 (8-13 SoCon) with VMI at 27-25 (6-15 SoCon).

The game was also senior day for Wofford as the program's eight senior Terriers were honored pregame: Grant Comstock, Adam Haber, Tyler Hare, Braden Hofmeyer, Morgan Lunceford, Dylan Rhadans, Michael Sills, and David Wiley.

Five Terriers pitched in the game with Branton Little (4-7) starting and taking the loss. He hurled 2.0 innings with five runs allowed on eight hits and one walk with a strikeout. Sheldon Egger provided 3.1 strong innings out of the bullpen with four late runs allowed. Michael Sills pitched 2.0 frames with just an unearned run surrendered with a pair of punchouts. Braden Hofmeyer followed before Noah McMahon tossed the final frame with no runs give up.

Just two Keydets pitched with starter Marcus Van Alstine (3-1) picking up the win. He went 6.0 innings with four runs (three earned) allowed on eight hits and a walk. Caden Plummer (1) notched a save as he pitched the last 3.0 frames with two runs allowed.

The Terriers were outhit 24-12 with senior Adam Haber leading the way on his trio of knocks with an RBI. Tyler Bak and Tanner Hardin each picked up two hits, including a double for each. Hardin drove home two runs, as did Tyler Hare. Niko Brini collected the other Wofford RBI. Hardin worked a walk to reach safely three times. On the bases, Haber tallied the lone Terrier steal.

VMI struck first with a solo homer and RBI single in the top of the first for a 2-0 lead.

Wofford responded in the bottom of the frame, as Tanner Hardin's RBI groundout coupled with Adam Haber's RBI single to tie things up at 2-2.

The Keydets struck for three in the top of the second with a pair of RBI singles and a sacrifice fly. They led 5-2.

In the bottom of the third, Wofford got one run back when Tanner Hardin delivered an RBI double. An inning later, Niko Brini's RBI groundout pulled Wofford to within 5-4.

However, VMI responded once more. Three runs scored in the fifth, and a solo homer in the seventh made the margin 9-4.

Wofford refused to quit as Tyler Hare roped a two-run single up the middle in the seventh to bring the Terriers back within striking distance at 9-6.

VMI found a rhythm from there, though, plating one more in the eighth before five runs in the ninth for a 15-6 lead and ultimate final score after Wofford could not strike back in the bottom of the ninth.

The regular season comes to a close with the Southern Conference Tournament next up. The tournament opens on Wednesday, May 21, in Greenville, South Carolina, at Fluor Field. The rest of the league wraps up the regular season tomorrow with Wofford's opening match-up information finalized upon the conclusion of tomorrow's contests.
