Wofford Football Completes First Scrimmage

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On Saturday evening, the Wofford football team took part in the first scrimmage of camp. It also marked the first two-a-day practice session of the season, as the squad also worked out in the morning.
 
During the morning practice held on the lower practice fields, the team worked for an hour and 45 minutes. Several highlights of the team drills included catches by Thomas Simmons and Jeff Ashley and an interception by Kevin Thomas.
 
At Gibbs Stadium during the evening scrimmage, the team ran 106 plays and held three kicking sessions.
 
The defense controlled the scrimmage early on as the first touchdown came when Blake Wylie picked off a tipped pass and returned it for the score.  Four drives later, linebacker Qay Bell made a tackle for loss on fourth down to end the drive, and Phillip LeGrande had a tackle for loss on a third down play to end another drive.
 
The field goal unit came out as three kickers converted extra points before backing up to 32-yards.  Kasey Redfern and Paul Inclan both converted from that distance.  After backing up another five yards, Christian Reed was the only kicker to spilt the uprights.
 
The offense scored its first touchdown of the day on the first play from scrimmage when play resumed with a 75-yard scamper from quarterback Michael Weimer.
 
The defense almost forced its second turnover of the game when Permis Philemon forced a fumble, but the offense was able to jump on it and retain possession.  Ten plays later, the defense did forced the turnover when LeGrande caused a fumble that was recovered by the defense.
 
Following a session of kickoff work, and four plays into a drive the defense forced its third turnover over when Tyler Gleason picked off a pass.  Donovan Johnson had a 40-yard run in the drive prior to the interception.
 
Two plays following the pick, Johnson found the end zone when he caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from Weimer.  The score would be the final touchdown for the offense as the defense controlled the remainder of the scrimmage highlighted by a Jessie Williams pass break up and a Tarek Odom sack on fourth down.
 
Wofford will take Sunday off before returning to the practice fields on Monday for the second of six two-a-days.
 
NOTES: The 2012 season begins with a road trip on September 1 at Gardner-Webb … Players held out of the scrimmage included WR Wade Francis, RB Bryan Youman, and S Kendall Bratcher.
