Watch Video From Media Day
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford senior running back Eric Breitenstein has been named the Southern Conference Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, while Georgia Southern senior defensive lineman Brent Russell has been named the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year in voting conducted by the league’s head coaches. Breitenstein and Russell were named Players of the Year following the 2011 season and also garnered the same preseason honors one year ago.
The league’s head coaches also selected an all-conference first and second team in conjunction with the league’s media day on Thursday. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes as part of the balloting. The Terriers had five players recognized by the league’s coaches, three on the first and two on the second team.
In addition, the conference’s nine head coaches have chosen Georgia Southern as the choice to win the league championship, while Wofford was picked to finish third. The Southern Conference Sports Media Association also selected Georgia Southern first, with Wofford in second place.
Breitenstein, a fifth-year senior from Valle Crucis, N.C., led the SoCon and ranked 10th nationally with 122.8 rushing yards per game. It was the second consecutive year he led the league in rushing. He finished the 2011 season with 1,474 yards, 19 touchdowns and rushed for at least 100 yards in 10 games, including a season-high 217 yards against Elon. Breitenstein enters 2012 needing just 368 yards to break into the top 10 of the league’s all-time rushing list.
Breitentein also earned a spot on the preseason Southern Conference All-Conference first team, along with offensive lineman Jake Miles and linebacker Alvin Scioneaux. Miles, a senior from Charlottesville, Virginia, started all twelve games last season at right tackle and helped pave the way for the Wofford rushing offense to rank first in the nation. Scioneaux, a junior from Garyville, Louisiana, was first team All-SoCon last season after leading the team with 85 tackles, 17 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks. Among SoCon players he was second in sacks and second in tackles for loss.
Offensive linemen Jared Singleton and Calvin Cantrell were named to the second team. Singleton, a junior from Lugoff, S.C., started eleven games last season at center and earned second team All-SoCon honors. A senior from Dacula, Georgia, Cantrell started all twelve games at left tackle.
The Terriers will report to campus on Sunday, August 5 and begin practice on Monday, August 6. A complete practice schedule will be released next week.
