SPARTANBURG, SC – The Wofford College football team completed the first week of spring practice on Saturday morning with a two-hour practice. The team worked in position groups and on offense or defense primarily. Team segments of the practice included an “Oklahoma” type drill.
“We are doing a lot of work on fundamentals and concepts in teaching the ins and outs of the offense and defense,” said head coach Mike Ayers. “There is a lot of installation offensively and defensively. We have tried to hit on everything in offense, defense and on special teams. Special teams for the most part we have worked really hard on getting them set up and making them understand the concept, how things operate, and the design. We have a good bit of our offense and defense package in and we are working real hard on finding some young guys a home. We are young at several spots and we are trying to get those guys we redshirted last year to get out there are see what they can do. We have guys that are proven All-Conference and All-American, but it is those other guys we have to find out about.”
“I think we have some young guys that are getting a good look,” said senior full back Eric Breitenstein. “The guys are getting after it with some high intensity, but we are not quite there. We have these fifteen practices to get it right and get it ready going into the season. Most of what we are doing is working on the fundamentals. Now is the time to work on just us and not worry about the team on the other side of the ball.”
Players who are currently injured include Bryan Youman, Josh Davis, Rickman Davis, Anthony Cardin, Alex Dunmire, T.J. Chamberlin, and Derek Boyce.
Wofford will hold the first of two scrimmages on Saturday, March 16 at 10:00 am. The second scrimmage is scheduled for Saturday, March 24, also at 10:00 am. In each scrimmage, the Terriers will run 80 to 100 scripted plays.
